Charles Herbert Reilly was born on 4 March 1874 in London. He was educated at Merchant Taylors' School and Queens' College, Cambridge. After graduating, he trained as an architect for two years in his father's office and in 1900, became a part-time lecturer in architectural design at King's College in London, shortly afterwards becoming a partner in an architectural practice.
